As far as I know, it's only the Manual that is affected? Someone else might be able to confirm though?

Our 2020 Jimny is a manual and never had any untoward noises from the transmission.

I have a 2021 model with same noise. Found this below on the German forum. I will mention it on my 1000km check.

"The Service Bulletin Q-AG6-004 of May 22nd, 2019 describes the " Optional spare parts information to reduce the noise from the transfer case when starting up ": Problem Description:When starting off in 1st gear, noises can be heard from the transfer case at approx. 2,000 rpm due to vibrations in the drive chain. Remedial measures:An optional spare parts set has been introduced to reduce noise from the VTG by optimizing friction and damping vibrations in the drive chain. ET information:Drive Chains - Set # 29200-78R00 29951-83050 flange nut (2)29941-77R00 screw retaining spring (2)29946-80051 oil drain plug (1)29945-80051 oil filler plug (1) 09106-06139 Screw, gear lever knob (1)09117-08079 PTO shaft screw (1)"

Had mine done and now at 20k kms I have the noise in 1st, 2nd and a slightly different noise in 3rd.
Another Aussie is having their TC replaced by Suzuki and yet another Aussie had the input shsft replaced.
Did these sorts of issues occur on previous models?

Hi Crash486,

I had it on my 2011 Gen 3 as well as my 2019 Gen 4. I took the Gen 3 in to get it checked by the dealer and they said that they all do that and that it wasn't a problem. I travelled another 90000kms on that one and it never got any worse over that time. I noticed it on the Gen 4, but it was about the same, so I ignored it. In both cases, it only happened occasionally on steep inclines at full throttle in first gear, so maybe not as bad as others.

I figured that if it had a complete failure later on, at least they had a record of it for a future repair under warranty.

Cheers, Mike

ls this rattle noise a sign of "failure" in the transmission or is it just a noise?

Unless it's a sign of impending failure l am not going to bother getting ours done (although it doesn't yet make the noise)

Unless Suzuki have modified the design, any new parts fitted will likely eventually start making the noise again.

Has anyone had this transfer box drive chain actually fail?

Hello, I changed the chain and the noise persists. Now they changed the whole transfer and the noise persists. There seems to be no solution. But there are units that do not have the noise, I do not understand it.

I have had the transfer chain replaced for this noise under a factory recall. It lasted two months then the noise returned. It is back at the dealers again today for them to evaluate.

My view on all of this is that it doesn't affect my driving of the vehicle on or off road but I want it firmly on record in the event there is a major failure.

Funny enough I watch a branch new Jimny be delivered whilst I was there. As the driver of the new car drove off the lot ...Grrrrt ... there was the sound with 0km on the clock,

Then it could be just a characteristic of the transmission.
Make it known to your dealer that the noise is there, and then just enjoy your car and forget about it.

You want to try owning a Defender, then you wouldn't worry about a bit of a rattle in first gear from time to time.
