The carb on a SJ get most of its bad reputation from morden mechanics that do not know carbs or the likes of me that do not take the time to sit down and learn how it works.
We had a guy in the Norwegian suzuki club that did a great write up on it and it is much easier to deal with when you are in the know. (Not sure I would dare to translate it)

Some problems with it come from leaks and pulling air. The worst is when it is worn and pull air by the shaft for the throtle valve. Thick grease can help or an O-ring and thick grease.
