I’d describe it as a quiet fart.

Seems to come from rear driver’s side on mine.

It is almost certainly the abs pump cycling. Like a 2 second zzzzzzzzZZ noise.

Could be the ABS pump as already mentioned.
The ABS pump is a 2 second zzzzzzz noise that occurs once after the engine is started, but only when the vehicle hits a certain speed (let's say 4 mph) in any gear including reverse. After this it will not occur again until the engine is turned off and restarted.
So it's not "every time" the vehicle pulls away, just once per journey, irrespective of load or revs etc.

So people may be referring to different noises including the ABS pump.

Disclaimer - that's how the ABS pump works and sounds on my G3, assume G4 has same bits.

Yokohama Geolanders, Sony head unit, NAUTILUS Air Horn, DRL conversion, Rear cargo space, Elvis Bobblehead, transfer Guard, Indian hanging Elephant, Koni Heavy track dampers, Custom SS exhaust, Voodoo Doll, Adventure Rack with LED ight bar, vintage ERIBA caravan usually attached (yes it's slow)

Im booking in this week for free 1000km service so im going to get them to check it out, will report back. I doubt its ABS because it does it almost everytime when you pull away in 1st gear. I know it has hill stop assist the brakes come on for like 2 seconds when you let off the brake on a slope

It's not the headlight self leveling thing on the back axle trying to cycle the headlights as a consequence of the weight transfer of setting off, possibly?

What I mean is is the noise that of a motor being turned on and off again? More of a buzzing than a clanging or graunching sound?

It just seems that it's being experienced by all gen4 owners and is therefore more likely to be an intended noise rather than a fault.

This has been discussed quite a bit on a German speaking jimny forum.

Apparently it's linked to the chain driven transfer case (which would explain why it appears to be emanating from behind the gearbox).

There is talk of a dealer-installed kit to solve the "problem" but noone over there has actually managed to source one AFAIK.

Some gen3 jimmies do the same thing (same transfer case) and I'm not aware of it causing any further issues.

Now Charlies solution I really like, the 3 and the 4 at home both do this.
Thanks Charlie.

I sometimes hear a little “grrreet”noise when I take off in first? Sounds like a cowling resonating to an rpm for a 1/2 second

Mine does it too. A lot of peeps on here have reported the same. I am of the opinion that if everyone's is doing it, then it must be one of the Jimny's little quirks??
