a welding blanket is no good cos it not the liquid that flamable its the fumes so a blanket is no good if you want to be silly enough to weld a petrol tank fill it with water then weld it with the water in it also you can tell if its fuel tight cos no water will come out

I've been reading the forum for some time but this topic prompted me to sign up at last after a personal act of stupidity reminding me that fuel tanks, and fuel, should be treated with respect.

I was in Mongolia and punctured the fuel tank of a Suzuki Swift about 150 miles away from the nearest recognisable town. I removed the fuel tank, emptied as much fuel as I could, then wondered how best I might get rid of the remaining dribbles of fuel/vapour before welding.

My very ill advised and rash solution was to light what remained with a blow torch. As if that wasn't stupid enough, I decided to watch with my face right over the hole I had unscrewed the fuel pump from and into which I was pointing the blow torch.

Cue a big bang, a lot of flames, a lot of pressure, me on the floor, hair face and T shirt on fire. Now luckily I had a huge bottle of water next to me and I was able to put myself out. The burns were painful but not life changing. I can assure you though that after that act of Darwin award like stupidity I've always thought twice about my actions when I'm working with fuel since!

So, in summary, I'd remove the fuel tank!

Exhausted, dehydrated, dizzy, and just plain stupid. But not high or drunk.

It sounds ridiculous but at the time this happened I'd been driving for nearly 40 hours alone, lost, and in the desert. I'm normally a fairly sensible chap but I fully admit common sense was somewhere else when this accident happened.

Mine too. Going to chop it out and maybe weld a box in it for additional storage.
