Explosion, death, disfigurement, even worse, the car may be destroyed
Have to say, I wouldn't have given it a second thought, but now someone has pointed it out I'd worry.
Especially with the jimny's tendency to a leaky tank
Might be all right as long as it doesn't smell of petrol.
Probably
If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

belive me you dont want a fuel tank going up in ya face i personaly have had first hand experience of this about 12 years ago and i wasnt even wilding or smoking so if a car needs welding near a tank it gets removed no matter how full and hard it is unless its a diesel

I agree. Not something I'd mess with for sure. It can't be that hard to remove a tank from a car that sits so high off the ground anyway. If it needs new bolts, pah, what's that cost? Pennies! So pennies and elbow grease = not burning your car, garage, house etc down!
Professional auto welders possibly take it as far as can be done but they know how far to risk it from experience but that's up to them and they have proper welding blankets etc.

Yeah I definitely agree with Kirky on this one. I removed my tank before welding the floor.

This is my first post as a soon to be Jimny owner so hello all!
I've been reading the forum for some time but this topic prompted me to sign up at last after a personal act of stupidity reminding me that fuel tanks, and fuel, should be treated with respect.
I was in Mongolia and punctured the fuel tank of a Suzuki Swift about 150 miles away from the nearest recognisable town. I removed the fuel tank, emptied as much fuel as I could, then wondered how best I might get rid of the remaining dribbles of fuel/vapour before welding.
My very ill advised and rash solution was to light what remained with a blow torch. As if that wasn't stupid enough, I decided to watch with my face right over the hole I had unscrewed the fuel pump from and into which I was pointing the blow torch.
Cue a big bang, a lot of flames, a lot of pressure, me on the floor, hair face and T shirt on fire. Now luckily I had a huge bottle of water next to me and I was able to put myself out. The burns were painful but not life changing. I can assure you though that after that act of Darwin award like stupidity I've always thought twice about my actions when I'm working with fuel since!
So, in summary, I'd remove the fuel tank!
