It most likely got power steering.
As far as I know all jimnys from 1998 have.

Norway 2005 Jimny M16A VVT, 235 BFG MT, 2" Trailmaster, ARB rear lck, 17%/87% high/low gears.

Agreed, the steering should be really quite light on a jimny, so if it's not I would examine it for faults most obviously a leak. Just for clarification though would you be able to post a picture of the engine bay?

Maybe someone has removed the drivebelt to "cure" a problem?  I don't think an unassisted steering box exists, unless other countries got them.

Looking at the parts catalogs, non-PS Jimnys do exist.

My suggestion would be to find a PS equipped model in a junkyard and grab the necessary bits. My philosophy is to use "factory bits" where ever possible, they were "engineered" to fit right and do the job.

It is the same steering box as the SJ so there is a box without assist, but not delivered on a jimny gen3 as far as I know. Or maybe the 2wd?

It seems we have a different approach to shopping for parts, and we're not looking at the same parts catalog - take a look at this link...

www.megazip.net/zapchasti-dlya-avtomobil...teering-link-3821057

You'll see this line near the top...

Steering link (SN413V:LHD:N/PS) Diagram Suzuki JIMNY

Notice the N/PS - it means no power steering - it means the SN413V, was sold without power steering.

I'm using megazip.net as an example simply because it's easier than a cut & paste from the catalogs I normally use, that page is for Pacific market models (Australia & New Zealand), but the European markets show the same thing - Jimnys were built for sale without power steering.

Does the power steering talk to the ECU or the ABS control unit (if fitted) in any way?  Steering angle is often an input for other vehicle functions.  Maybe the Jimny isn't quite that advanced.

On a 2004, it would have been hydraulic power steering, there would have been a pressure switch on the pump that sends a signal to the ECU to "bump" the idle if the steering is turned with the vehicle stationary, all the ECUs should have that input, other than that, if it has traction control there might be a steering angle sensor.

Ah Australia explains it. Yes you can do it and as suggested finding a donor in a dismantlers yard is going to be the easiest way to get all the parts for sensible money.
