4x4 isn't a get out clause, vans directs website points out which of the pick ups are legal for car speed (don't know how to link).
Navara, X class, Ranger, Amorok are all limited to lower speeds, all Dmax are legal for car speeds and the most basic of the L200, seems like everything else is limited.

If that's the case why would the government themselves publish 4x4 being an exemption on their website. Also whilst vans direct may be many things they're not high up my list of sources of legal advice. If the police are interpreting the law to be 4x4 and less than 2040kg empty then that needs to be challenged in court by someone on the receiving end of a summons.

Thanks for that, I'm glad I came on, I had the wrong end of the stick altogether. A while back I thought about buying an Iveco Daily 4x4 crew cab pick up. Was a bit put off by being subject to van speed limits, due to its weight. As it meets the criteria, 4x4, fixed roof and second row of seats, maybe it's time for a new vehicle.

According to their website the 4x4 daily is a 7 tonne gross vehicle mass which means you can't drive it on a standard B car licence, you need a C or C1 license which as far as I am aware is vehicles between 3500kg and 7500kg or over. In this weight range I'm not sure there's any difference between which axles are driven or not with regards to speed limits.

Way back when in a past life I drove for the council and we had a 4wd 4door cage tipper iveco that was a 5.5 tonne beautiful thing to drive and the best bit was none of the kids could drive it as it was only us old boys who had the chance or above licence to take it out so it wasn't battered like the transits. But because of it being over the 3.5 tonne bracket I'm sure it was classed as a small wagon not a big van.

I am still thinking what qualifies the Jimny as a commercial vehicle and assume that they will pitch it as a Car Derived Van (CDV), to satisfy this the following will apply

All up weight - 2 tonnes
No rear seats, mountings or [rear] seatbelts
No side windows in the rear or opaque and not able to open.

In the UK a CDV is classed as a light commerical vehicle and comes under the same rules (including speed limits) as a car. I guess the license you need is easier and tax and insurance will be less on a CDV than another type.

All of the pictures I have seen of the Jimny commercial didn't have opaque windows in the rear, I still wonder if this will change?

The other alternative is that it will be a 'Dual Purpose Vehicle' but doubt then that it will qualify to be removed from the list of vehicles for emissions.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to cite your source for the above information because as I linked earlier in this thread the government website clearly states that cdv is subject to the same speed limits as cars.

I thought that was what I wrote,

Copied from the link.

Car derived vans are the only light commercial (goods) vehicles which are subject to the same speed limits as a car.

Sorry didn't see your posts on page 3.

It is a dual purpose vehicle as it is 2 or 4 wheel drive, not a CDV (or can they be the same thing?). I am still unsure about the rear windows, if there are rear seats (the other definition of a dual-purpose vehicle) it has to have rear windows, but if there are no rear seats, but is 4x4 it is not stated.
