That little plate is held on with 2nd 10mm bolts. One is a bit hidden behind the clutch cable bracket.

Just read it is no 3. Seems always to be the case. I think this was an issue on sj engines too

Was there any light knocking noise before it died that was there a good few months? Top end. Quietened down when warm?

I don't know about a light knocking noise - I thought it was a valve that had gone - it ran fine for about 10 miles making a lot of tapping from the top end then it cut to only 3 cylinders working (the spark plug got clobbered by the looks of things). I fully expected to see a broken valve or simlar when the head came off but it's all sat there looking perfect.

Markyp2000 - Yes, single cam - it is a size 2 piston (I understand that each cyliner is marked either size 1 or 2)...
