Is there a chance your front diff is just completely seized (i.e. broken)?

In 2WD the front hubs should release and the front diff shouldn't be turning so it wouldn't stop you driving.
Might be worth checking to see if the front diff has any oil in it...

Waite, I agree with Simon it sounds like wind up so there must be a difference between front and back, You've not got different size tyres front and back by any chance have you? even same size markings - different manufacturers or new one end - well worn the other might do it.
If you're talking about neutral on the main gear lever it won't make any diference. If the transfer lever is in 4WD front and back are still locked together.

OK. Try removing the front prop shaft ( dead easy). Jack up one wheel and see if you can turn the input to the diff by hand / or turn the wheel and see if the input turns. If not, try it with both front wheels off the ground.

If it turns with both wheels jacked, you either have a locker in the front, the diff has been welded up or it is broken.

If it still does not turn it could be a siezed pinion bearing on diff or its otherwise broken.

Then try turning the output of the transfer box. It should turn freely. If not, problem in transfer box.

Si
