Could be transmission wind-up. You can't drive on tarmac in 4wd for this reason, Jimny's don't have a centre diff so when the inside wheel can't slip as it would on loose ground it winds up the transmission.
This explains why you can't progress any further when on tarmac.
Have you only just go the car? or have you driven it on tarmac in 4wd before?

Reversing can unwind it if the damage isn't beyond the point of no return.
When it winds up it can be followed by a nice big bang as something gives up.
Sounds like its been done by the previous owner and they've palmed it off knowing that many buyers wouldn't always test 4wd.

Sounds like wind up to me
I have only ever had it once. That was in the snow turning round, as i have to turn round to land on the drive properly.
In reverse with some lock applied the car grumbles, and will stop... back into first and its fine. I tend to try and use hills to reverse in 4x4 especially if i need to steer! Decent amount of snow, a good covering, so its not like the wheels couldn't slip.
I spent time when i was looking for a jimny for someone who wouldn't know it was 4x4. Mine had clearly never been offroaded. The gear stick was very stiff and clunky. Oil change and now i can change easily!
