That looks good for the departure angle, though I thought that towbars had to be type approved? But yeah mine is slightly different but the idea is the same a steel block bolted between the flanges with a big hole for a shackle.

As for shock loading that's why I'm not the owner of a snatch strap. Kerr is the way, less violent on the recovered vehicle.

The trick is when you're first stuck (recover at this stage)
Don't keep trying to get out,you just dig in more
Needing silly amounts of force to get you out

A KERR can be lethal if the recovery points are weak. Never use one on a tow ball as the forces involved can rip the mountings apart. The British Army only use KERR between armoured vehicles. Each rope is tagged and only used 6 times and then destroyed. They never use them on Land-rovers. I saw the rear crossmember (yes it was corroded) on a series Land-Rover ripped from the chassis rails and slammed into the back door of the Range Rover that was doing the pulling. Re-read what jackonlyjack has to say above.
Use of a KERR is taken to lightly. One guy died when the tow ball was ripped off the back of a motor and went through the back window of his motor and hit him in the back of his head.
