But which is the best engine, you would assume the VVT, but is it really?

You can find good and rough examples of them all but the vvt is newer and had longer in production than the others so is more numerous and therefore better odds of a good one . Also the vvt is very tractable even at low revs for such a small motor. Ultimately though its the condition of the specific engine and it's service history that is actually important.
