I wonder if they do snorkels for audi's

The snorkel is for other purposes as well as stopping water ingress. Dust protection for instance. Probably not a problem in wet UK but down here in Oz it is a real motor killer. Just Having the snorkel up high where there is less dust, particularly in convoy on outback trips, makes a huge difference to the life of filters. Also, many of us fit pre-filters on top of the snorkels to catch the courser things like bugs and grasshoppers and there always seems to be locust plagues in Summer. I've had to empty my pre-filter 2-3 times on a bad day because of dust and locusts so they are a real protective measure.

Doesn't happen instantly, takes a while, but WD40 will definitely eat or soften, rot and turn to goo some rubbers and plastics. I've seen it happen. Most electrical insulation seems at least fairly proof against it though.

As a barrier against water, rather than to shift it out of a damp contact, waterproof white grease works pretty well, and there are water resistant silicone based electrical sealers specifically designed to keep water out.

I helped a friend in WA (He runs a sheep station near Carnarvon) choose a new ute and we talked about snorkels and dust from convoys etc. We eventually decided that when you're following someone it can't be any better with a snorkel because it's still sucking dusty air. When you're driving through red dust, you get red dust everywhere right?! Raising the air intake 60cm isn't going to make much difference. The only way to avoid the dust is follow a loooong way behind!

5 years later I was back over there and he's still got the ute (a Rodeo) and said it's no worse without a snorkel than the previous utes he's had with one.

That's without a pre-cleaner though, and I could see that making a difference.

In the UK as with Landrovers, the majority of Jimnys you see with snorkels will never actually be in a situation where they need it. Most people just like the look. The same is true of a lot of modifications.

I see my snorkel as "just in case" device.
