Saturday was a busy day. I set about fixing the rear bearings on the car. I hadn't ever done them and I was convinced at least one of them was broken given the whirring noise I have had for the past few months. I've got disks installed so it wasn't such a worry given the axles wouldn't fall out.

Getting started removing the 4 bolted backing plate for the calliper:

Inspecting the old bearing - both sides looked identical and were both equally shot:

All pushed in and then the backing plate went back on:

Cleaned up my rusty old transfer box and fuel tank guard in bright red (only paint I had left):

Finally got all of Keith's body panels fitted and wired up. New fog light and a new numberplate light made with 12v LED's:

And she's drivable! For the first time in about 5 months she's roadworthy again!

A few more bits and bobs to do:
- Clean up the underside (transfer box forward) - angle grinder with wire wheel and Buzzweld paint
- New transfer box mounts
- New black steel rims all round
- Snorkel install (after treating inner wings with Buzzweld)
- quick touch up re-spray with green raptor

I might be missing something here, but where is the equivalent of the backing plate that holds the half shaft into the axle case?

Roger

Good work @reason2doubt. It looks like a good conversion with Keith's kit and your hard work :-)

Cheers Riccy.

Yes, I saw that but the picture that shows the bearing fitted does not have that bracket in place, and as the bearing should be an interference fit on the shaft
ie not removeable until replacement time, why hasn't the plate been fitted?

The bracket has a little slot cut into it Rog, so it just slots over the end when it's in.

Thanks Riccy, it's been a great learning curve! Nearly done (for the time being...).

Cheers Reason2doubt. Still slightly confused so would be obliged if you would advise who supplied the disc brake conversion?

Here are the backing plates as mentioned:
www.jimnybits.com/jimny-rear-brake-disc-conversion-kit.html

Here's the full kit:
www.jimnybits.com/jimny-rear-disc-conver...full-bundle-kit.html

Seems expensive, I don't remember it being that expensive when I got it a couple years ago...but hey ho.
