If the K&N is less of a restriction to airflow than the paper filter, then there will be an improvement in engine performance, simple.
I don't have the gear to flow test but 30 yrs of messing with carbs from SU's to side draught to twin to triple IDF carb set ups, filters do restrict engines.
I have seen performance increases on a dyno, changing from ITG foam filters to K&N, never mind paper filters.
Paper filters are numpty proof, if you don't change it, eventually the engine will stop. Ignore an oil assisted filter and you can ruin an engine.
The changes can result in an engine that gives a more drivable power curve, rather than a bigger power curve.
The difference is plain to see, my wife (a more less interested in engines person would be hard to find) remarked on it.

This video shows a average increase in power of 7 HP on a 3.5 300 hp performance engine. That's around a 4% increase. Put into jimny numbers, that's just a tad over 3 hp more, theoretically, given that the Jimny engine is no way near being a performance engine.. more like no actual gain in power.

I just stuck a K&N sticker on my jimny and i swear it's faster. I haven't driven it yet, But it looks faster just with the sticker on.

I wouldn't call a m13a vvt a low performance engine, 83 hp is a lot when compared to something like a bmc 1275 that could just about manage 56hp on a good day . I know that is comparing apples and crocodiles in terms of technology but it does speak to the level of performance and development that has already gone into optimising the m13a. To then think that an air filter in isolation is going to make any significant difference in performance is optimistic.

So, going up the same hill every day at about the same time of day, to get to work, with the same tyre pressures, same road conditions, similar weather conditions, same weight in the car and similar amount of fuel, same approach speed to the hill, I now no longer have to change from 5th to 4th
Works for me

Can I ask a question, when you replaced the paper filter with the oiled one, how many miles had the paper one covered?

It was nearly new - the car was completely checked over, serviced and MOTd three weeks ago.
Its still mint bar a bit of dust in the fins - Ive kept it in case I break the new one

Have a look at some of David Vizards work on air filters and their effects.

Did anyone see the Japanese animated fantasy film "Spirited Away"?
if you haven't seen it, then it's worth a look especially if you have children, even though it is a little 'dark' in places its still a nice story.
Anyway, just for fun, and in keeping with its Japanese heritage, I fitted a Kaonashi (No Face) aerial topper.
Kaonashi was a spirit character in the film.

Got delayed so only got one side kingpins done. My drive is like a blast furnace at the moment so I'm off inside for an ice pop!

Fitted new pads and discs as the existing factory ones would double as razor blades, then went for a hill drive to bed them in. Definitely want some braided lines now but it is going to be after the holiday as I suspect that new brakes instead of a canal trip won't go down too well.
