So do the brackets reduce the load the shocks pot onto the chassis bracket? That was my understanding but I was not !00% sure I understand the purpose of them.

the relocation brackets reduce the stress on the mount big time allowing the shock to move in a more suitable plane ( the bottom of the shock is turned 90 degrees with the brackets
with a lifted jim in particular the springs touch the shocks without the bracket. a good dose of off road and somethings gonna break.
as standard the shock is positioned at an angle on the bottom mounting bolt. excess axle articulation usually results in broken bolts but all the pressure will stress the mounts too.
i'd recommend for any off road jimny

Picked up some sj rims as a second set for mud tyre B) $40 aswell plus a free spare, bit of surface rust but nothing abit of sanding and a lick of paint wont fix. Guy said if they don't fit properly aswell he will take them back but im sure I read somewhere sj rims fit straight on?

Yes they will fit unless they are over wide.
I have used SJ rims on my Jimny.
Lots of Vitrara + SJ rims get swapped over.
