Wider tyres on stock rims new Jimny

Hi, thinking of getting a new Jimny with the ironman GVM upgrade (lift) and want to fit 215/75/15 tyres, I assumed that could do this on the stock alloys but the first tyre place I went to to enquire said I would need new rims to fit a wider tyre.

I am pretty sure I have seen many Jimnys out there with wider tyres on stock rims, and there seem to be many threads in forums about it (this one included) but after looking online at some other sites regarding rims size to tyre width I am now unsure ?

Is there something official that can be referenced ? 
what are the potential problems if I fit a 215 tyre on the stock rims ? is it likely to pop the seal when 4wd ? can anyone give me a bit of advice as adding rims as well really starts to hike the price.  Also I quite like the stock rims.

215/75R15 will fit straight on. Rims are 5.5” wide, so loads of tyres will fit. Just check the recommended rim sizes from tyre makers. I’d give that tyre place a wide berth, they clearly know very little about wheels & tyres.

Hmm I've been searching the Web and a lot of sites have size guides that seem to indicate that 5.5 inch rims Max tyre width is 195 which is what comes on the stock model. I know that people do put wider tyres on but just trying to clarify

Just reading through your jimny build thread, it sounds like you have 215s on stock rims and suspension.  And have driven some highway and off road without trouble.  Good to know I guess.  Still confused by the various  tables I've seen online with 195 being the supposed Max width for 5.5 rims.

If you search for tyre sizes vs rim sizes there is a bit of a mixture.

Some sites say 195 in r15 is the maximum, others say 205 and several say 215.

My Gen 3 had 205/70r15 fitted and were changed to 215/75r15 Maxxis Worm Drive. I swapped these tyres on to the Gen 4 alloys when I changed car. I think the Jimny is supplied with 215r15 in some markets as standard on the same rims.

215 is regarded as the widest you can go on 5.5” rims, but on Jimny rims they work fine. As 300BHP says plenty of people on here with 215r15 and no issues.

And thanks guys, just ducked into the dealer to put a hold deposit down, and then over the road to the tyre guys they usually use to chat to them, they eased my mind and gave me a couple of options,
The BFG K02 looks great but dam they are pricy, I just had a couple of cooper AT tyres put on my navara and they were 305 each, but the BFG K02 are around 345 each
But they recommended Kumho KH AT tyres for 225 which is a bit more manageable
(AUD btw)

Considering this car will likely not be doing major offroad all the time, but get a fair bit of around town use and when it does go offroad it will likely encounter sand a fair bit I think the Kumhos look to be tthe better option, and the price helps in that direction too,

Still confused by all the different information online but happy to go with the 215s on stock now.

If you have a particular tire in mind, go to that tire manufacturer's website and research that tire, in the size you are interested in, there will be a recommended rim width as well a range of acceptable rim widths.

They look good, but M/T is mud terrain ? more aggressive than I need I think but they do look great

Take a look, judge for yourself, We don't get much rain, but when we do, these are to be driven wisely.

Otherwise they're the real McCoy.

I have had 235 -75-15 on stock Gen3 alu rims long enough to wear them out.
And of course there is a difference between low profile tires and high like 75 and road and offroad tires.
I have never went off the bead on the rims offroading with 0.4 bar "pressure" and they wear off evenly so i am happy.
If you have the need to get your mods approved by every involved manufacturer you will find some kind of stop message very fast.

For my BFG 235's they say 6 to 8 inch wide rims.
For the BFG 215's they say 5.5 to 7 inch.
