Door Lock repair 1998 Jimny was created by rhino666
As can be seen in the first photo, the spring that controls the little plate that seals the key entry slot has broken on my 1998 Jimny drivers door lock, so I took it out in the hope that I could inspect/repair.
Unfortunately as can be seen in the second photo, these are not designed to be taken apart. The stainless steel bezel wraps around and is crimped around the aluminium barrel casting. The bezel would be damaged on removal and would be in too bad a shape to effectively refit.
Just a warning to others that these door locks cannot be repaired, so if a replacement is required you will end up with a second key.
I will just put everything back together and put up with the broken spring:-)

If you have central locking could you swap that tumbler for one you don't use such as the back door then you are preserving the functionality of the driver side you use most

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

As Lambert suggests, swap it with the passenger side, and cover the hole with clear tape to keep water out. If you are anything like me, you haven't used the passenger side lock ever- for all I know the key doesn't fit mine.

Thanks for the replies.
I have to say that the lock internals, spring aside, were in very good order. I did spray a bit of GT85 to offset the white grease that was baulking the wafers a bit but that is all I am going to do.
The door lock barrels appear handed, so I think a swap would not work. Can't comment on the boot lock as not been able to find a pic to compare to the door locks.
Ebay sell some neat little covers for the gen 4 locks but nothing jumping out at me for the gen 3.
