If you undo the radiator cap does it pop back out?

There are 2 valves in the radiator cap.
One (2 in picture) lets the expanded hot water go out into the expansion tank, the other (3) lets the water that flowed out back in as the engine cools, looks like this one is stuck and you are not getting the water to flow back from the tank.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

Amazing :) thank you so much :)

It makes perfect sense, i could see now that the radiator is quite empty and the resevoir is full, and i could see if i squeeze the pipe from the resevoir to the radiator, then the watter spills in exactly where the radiator cap turn on, so it seams the radiator cap is malfunctional,

Do you guys still use the OEM radiator cap ?

Mine got replaced like a month ago, cause my coolent started boiling in the resevoir bottle, so perhaps i have a wrong cap on there or something,

Thanks alot :)

i love this forum :) really helpful people :)

Mine is the oem cap.

From my picture

1 is the rubber seal that seats on the upper rim and stops the cap leaking.
2 seats on the lower rim of spout and then lifts up under pressure, and allows water to flow out of the radiator through the little holes in the silver part along the pipe to the expansion bottle.
3 is usually loose & dangly, it lifts up when there is water in the radiator and seals. When there is no water or when the water contacts, it drops down and allows water to be drawn from the expansion tank.

Why you had boiling in the expansion tank is a bit of a mystery, it can happen if the seal 2 is broken, or lifted up by something on top of the rim of the spout, but is more likely with a jammed thermostat, blocked radiator or head gasket leak, however, a head gasket leak usually leaves the hoses firm when cold, not sucked flat.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

Can you please explain to me, the rubber washer/seal at number 3' which is on top of the lowest part ofthe cap, should it be able to move freely relative to the shaft at number 3, or should th be firmy so that that shaft at 3 just move up and down to open the right chaimber of flow.

Please just explain how the number 3 must work , the radiator cap was working fine for a weekend or so but then just a few days back the pipe started looking sucked in again, if i remove the radiator cap then the pipe turn back to normal and and air gets sucked in, so its like if there gets a vacuum formed inside the radiator, where water can exit only. And therebt the volume decrease in the radiator as the steam coool down ,

Thank you,

On mine #3 is disturbingly loose and wobbly when the cap is removed, but I guess that it floats on the water in the radiator, and seals, once there is pressure there it doesn't move, #2 lifts up to vent excess fluid into the catch tank.
On cooling the partial vacuum in the radiator causes #3 to drop down and allows the air pressure outside to force fluid back from the catch tank.

It won't work if the hose to the catch tank is collapsed/kinked/disintergrating inside or if the cap on the catch tank is sealed somehow.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)
