Tyre Sizes - Rough Guide Thread

Generally speaking narrow but tall tyres are far better off-road than wide ones. 195mm /7.5inches is plenty wide enough for a vehicle as light as a Jimny but unfortunately the choice of decent narrow tyres is small because the majority of 4x4s are twice as heavy as a Jimny and people think wide tyres are cool.

I think the 750 32" size is what Brett/maverick runs on jalapeno. Gets away with the height (useful) as they are narrow (70's look), therefore they seem to perform pretty well. You would need to ask him about lift and/or rubbing tho

I have recently installed a 2" trailmaster lift and just got a set of 215/75/R15 General Grabber AT3s fitted this afternoon (2004 Jimny). I'm running 7.5" wide steel wheels and from reading this thread it seemed the jury was out on whether the 215s might scrub or not.

Unfortunately, pulling into the petrol station on my way back from the garage I went over a very minor dip in the road and both front tyres scrubbed

If I replace my wide wheels with stock steelies will this solve my problems? And will the 215s fit the wheels fine? Where is it on the arch that the scrubbing usually happens? These things never go smoothly haha!

Yes the tyres will fit standard wheels
as for where yours are rubbing just let them catch a few more times
and it will become evident
then make a decision to trim or not

215/75/15 with a 2" lift should be no problem. Have you got front mud flaps?

Yes I do have mudflaps. After posting yesterday I realised the garage had inflated the tyres to 30psi so I deflated them to 23psi and went over some big speed bumps and they didn't scrub, so I'm not sure if that has fixed it?

I run mine at 20psi front and rear. 15psi doing proper offroad. Remember the larger the tyre, less pressure required.

I'm the owner of a 2017 Jimny, all stock, trying to get good mods for it!

About tyres, I saw a lot of people putting 215/75/15 and I always wonder about performance.
I agree most of Mud tyres are on this size and the extra clearance will be an advantage but how about off road usage?

I take for granted on road the car will be slower, just for the extra weight and size but I'm interested about sluggishness, slowness during offroad.
Is 215 good for that or although extra clearance, everything else will be worse? climb slopes? will be the 4W-L too long?

215 isnt that much bigger. Its a common choice because of tyre availability at a decent price and choice. The gearing isnt greatly affected. 235 can be run (i know of one lad who does and he manages ok off tarmac, but it is slow on the road).

Mine had 215 BFGs on when i bought it, so i dont have any real comparison to the standard size, but this link should give you some idea what the change will be:

You can then start to look at changing the gearing with grimjeeper.com (all the gearing stats are in the wiki on this fine site )
