UK mot test?

Had my MOT today, no advisories, however lowest tread depth on my tyres was 8.4mm, so not exactly borderline!

At this rate they'll get failed for age before tread depth.

"Consequences". Now you are sounding like the Post Office. Yes, if there is a fault they should find it, but if no fault exists, statistics or not, they must pass it.

Out here in Spainland The ITV (MOT) is performed by a government agency via a drive through test where after booking online you drive through a number of bays to have an emissions test, headlights adjustment test, then all lights test, rolling road brakes test, suspension and linkages test, along with seatbelts and tow bar lights test if not previously done.
All in all about 1/2 hour & 48 euros with a 2 week notice to correct failed items.

Tyres only seem to last 4 or 5 years before the rubber hardens and starts to crack.  You can get a lot longer if you keep them out of the sun, e.g. in a garage.  It must be even worse in sunny countries.

I suppose only low profile (smaller tread depth when new) or high mileage cars wear out the tread before the tyre ages too much.

That's similar to the HGV test in the UK, when we used to have a 7.5T horsebox I was always happy to go as you knew it would be an unbiased test, 

As a member of the Birmingham University Motor Club, I looked after the students union walk through panel van and that required an HGV test because of it's weight. The test was brutal and involved a 4ft crowbar on the suspension.
