The joys of driving my 1st Jimny!

Am absolutely sold on it so far. Makes driving on icy/muddy country roads in 2wd exciting, with it being so light and rear wheel drive my heart is kept in good working order every time the rear wiggles! (won't engage 4wd until I can afford new tyres after reading the info on this site regarding tyre selection, my jimny currently has a different tyre make on each wheel!!) I find it very quiet in the cabby to the extent that often I think I have cut out, but not fortunately. I am also very surprised to find how roomy it is and all my tools fit in no problem (after I removed all but the driver's seat, and it was an easy job to). It's just a pity I have been addicted to landrovers for so long else I would have been driving one of these years ago and would have saved a fortune!

There are so many benefits of Suzukis over Land Rovers. I could do with a Disco now with my little one mind!
Having changed the transfer boxes on both a Jimny and a 90, I wouldn't want to own a Land Rover though I don't think. I can bench press a Jimny transfer box up with one arm and fit the mounting bolts with the other. Not possible on any Land Rover!

When I was younger, I changed the transfer box & gearbox on a Landrover on my own, much easier than the jimny, I took all the gears out of the transfer through the bottom, and split it off the gearbox, then took both out standing on the ground through the chassis (so no bending or stretching involved). Doubt if I'm strong enough now though
The jimny certainly isn't as easy to work on, and if you are used to Landrover spares prices, add a zero on the end for Suzuki parts
If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

Hopefully I won't be needing to replace the Suzuki parts as often as I had to on the defender, especially any electrical's!!

That's an interesting comment. My Freelander was cheap on parts but a pain to work on in some respects. I liked the Jimny in that I could access things. for instance just jacking it up was simpler.

The jimny is too small and fiddly- virtually every job looks as though it can be done, but you just can't quite get to the bolts, or just can't quite get the part out/off (like the gearbox).
Luckily, being made in Japan, with reasonable quality parts, it doesn't break as often as the Landrover used to.

Some parts are fiddly but once worked on they usually present no problem next time.
Bigger cars tend to be more unwieldy and I am getting past the ability to lug heavy metal about.
