ive got a 1.9 DCI megane, only had to replace 3 crankshaft pulleys, a turbo and the clutch!
the 1.5s are meant to be alot better than the 1.9!
Hit 60mpg at one stage on a run!

don't agree with that a petrol will suffer very quickly with a little water around the plugs and causes a misfire you don't get this with a diesel as no plugs so its down to other electric which a modern petrol and diesel have about the same amount and this is easier to protect so lose the plugs and its a lot easier to drive in water
only problem with my jimny in the water is the plugs getting wet as were the plugs are just fill up and it has no were to go

Modern diesel injectors are electronically controlled. They would be just as useless in water.
What you want is a proper diesel engine, like a Peugeot XUD9
