Getting this muffler off

The back muffler is all so badly rotted that I am surprised it isn't blowing. I didn't realise there was a support bracket by the tail pipe until I had it away with the rear bumper. It must have come off years ago. Here's the question though, when I get a new rear box how do I take off the old one particularly and break the join without making a mess of the pipe that runs from Cat to back??

There are no bolts or nuts to speak of, all rotted away!!

Maybe a chisel in the gap and a nice swift blow with a suitable sized hammer. Maybe brace it from the rear to avoid bending the pipe.

I was thinking of the grinder or a hacksaw down the join. Are the two sides held with a nut and bolt or is one threaded or have a welded nut for a bolt to go in. I need to preserve the end that is staying.

I'd still like a straight system!! :woohoo:

Use a hack saw between the joint if the bolts are that rusted it wont take long then chisel the tack welded nuts off

Aha, so there are welded-on nuts. Thanks Mark. Which side do you know?? I'd guess on the muffler side. I ask cos I might dremel the heads of the bolts off (what's left of them hehehehehe - should take only minutes). The stuff was flaking away to the touch. ;) If I put a hammer to this the remaining pipe ain't gonna survive.

What, with a spanner  ............there is nowt left to put a spanner on with this rot box. LMAO
I'll order a box next week when my ship comes in then as soon as this is off I can dive in to the rust in that area before replacing it.

Ah yes I see what you are getting at. I can go with heating to break the bond - you choose impleemnts like I do, torch and hammer. Hehehehehe. Gottit now! It's what I would do but I think once the heads are off the bolts the thing will come away peaceably.
