I have the usual rust around the bottom of the head lights, but tonight when I slammed the bonnet shut, two large chunks of rusty metal fell into the bumper 
The plan is to take off the front bumper and the head lights out at some point and have a good look at the state of it.
So my question is, how difficult is this to repair generally? Is it better to get a replacement cross member (whatever its called?) and weld it in, or can it be cut out and patched fairly easily?
