Now I am, really frightened.
Last time I did a job like this without lifting the head I stuffed God knows what in the bore to keep the valves up. That was aeons ago.

Why take it to a main dealer any garage should be more than capable to do it
I rebuilt my engine while it was still in the car in my home garage

I don't particular;y trust a main dealer more but they are more likely to have done a job like this before.

I would guess they would not rebuild anything, they would just bolt on a brand new, pre-assembled component.
I would find a local engineering specialist,
Martin
2003 M13 early KAP build.
3" Trailmaster lift with 1.5 Spacers on front
Customised winch bumper and roll cage
235/85R16 Maxxis Bighorns on 16" Rims, 4:1 Rocklobster, Rear ARB locker and on-board air
Corrected arms all-round, rear disks, Recaro seats and harnesses

When I was younger a) I had more energy and drive to do jobs like this and b) the manuals were aimed a lot more at DIYers like me. The last biggish job I did like this was to replace the clutch on my LJ80 - you can tell how far back that was. 20 years ago I would not have hesitated.
Oh, and motors were simpler.

I totally agree with this, My brother has been a mechanic for over 30 years working in dealerships. He hates the fact that they dont fix anything these days they just bolt on new parts.

So how much for them to bolt on a new/recon head do we think.
I should phone them but I know they are going to quote silly money. I only bought goldilocks about a month ago and the smokey @*@@* is the only real problem. Otherwise I love it.
The one thing the DIYer has is time and no mechanic gives that up for free but life is too short these days to waste a weekend on it.
