It sounds like the airbag squib has gone(the bit behind the steering wheel on the end of the steering column) if you spun the steering wheel round while you were extending it that would be enough to break the ribbon inside it.

Horn and airbag connection both run through the squib. It allows connection and rotation.Worth checking the feed to the horn though but more likely the squib.
