It's fun being able to tear away at traffic lights. My favourite test hill showed just how good it is. With the 1.3 it was a third gear climb to the top, now it accelerates up the hill in fifth gear... Made me smile.

I will have to be careful although it still has smooth and controllable acceleration

Did you chip it at all or only swapped the engine?
Did you use the M13A sump and ECU?
Injectors?
Seriously nice Jimny that.
Would love to do a M18A
Wonder how well a M16A would work? More available here. If I go M18A I'll have to import.

Just swapped the engine. It's reasonably straight forward but you need to be confident and have a good array of tools and an extra pair of hands. All up it's a good 2 days work for two people. It runs great on the 1.3 ECU, has 1.8 injectors with 1.3 fuel rail, Jimny sump, pick-up and oil filter holder. I had to remove a dowel from the engine so the bell housing would mate up, You also need to either drill a new dip stick hole in the rocker cover or use the Jimny rocker cover (I used the 1.8 rocker). Some guys here are using the 1.8 throttle body but it wasn't working on mine so I'm using the Jimny TB for the time being.
Any M motor should work but the selection should be based on the current engine, e.g.; if you have a VVT Jimny I think you should use a VVT donor, if you don't have VVT you should use a non VVT engine… I think! ECU compatibility.
Looking at the specs of the different M motors the 1.5 and 1.6 have high compression ratios compared to the more 4WD friendly 9.5:1 (1.3) and 9.6:1 (1. ratios.
This is not a job I'd want to have to do again in a hurry but I'm very happy with the outcome.
I should add that if it wasn't for a great how-to guide done by one of the guys here in Aus I wouldn't have done this.
Wiki M motors
While I had the bumper off I got a clearer pic of how I support my anti-sway bar once it's unbolted from the chassis
