  A progress update.
Managed to remove timing cover.
Struggling to line up dots on cam sprockets as per diagram.
Really appreciate some guidence here.
In the attached pic I believe on the compression stroke with crank drift upwards, the red arrows display dots on can sprockets, yellow highlight is painted arrow.

Put the engine to TDC and align the marks then. TDC is the only position where the marks make sense.
If they are out by half a tooth or so the timing chain is worn and needs replacement.

I'm confused to say the least.
The car was running fine before I pulled it apart.
It get hot after about 29 minutes of driving, tis why I pulling it apart. If the front piston is at top of the stroke, shouldn't that be TDC ?

There are two TDCs, because it takes two revolutions to cycle a cylinder fully. (Both the back & front pistons are at the top together)

The cams rotate at half engine speed, so the holes in the cams will either be straight up, or straight down when the crank is at TDC.

You time it so they are straight down, and the valves make it so that the front (number 1) is on compression. (Both 1& 4 fire together, it is a "wasted spark system" timed off the crank)

EDIT: looks like the crank is about 60 degrees off TDC in the photo.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

Just an update.
Head was finally removed, discovered the cams needed to be remove to facilitate that.
I'm hoping for some clarity on timing marks.
On closer inspection of the timing sprocket I observed 3 individual marks, 1. A dot stamped, 2. A small triangle pointing in the direction of the chain 3. a small notch, the latter was the only mark that line up with the mark on the head at TDC. See attached pic.

Looking at head gasket I notice it in three layers, is that normal?
Straight edge and feeler gauge used on head and block, no distortion  revealed.
On another not on attempting log in on my phone, I received a message that my email/IP was spambot, although ok through laptop on same network.
Regards
Kappy

That's right, the timing mark is actually the tiny notch in the sprocket rim a few degrees away from the drill hole in the end of the cam.

I don't know about the head gasket, they are usually some sort of layered composite though.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)
