Hi, I have a noise coming from my Jimny 2013, its had a lot of work done to it recently the noise appeared after sitting for quite a few months.

doesn't happen sometimes until 5 minutes into a drive, sometimes it happens right away and last week it went a full 15 minutes without happening

The wheel bearings have been changed but that hasn't made a difference, I have a video of it here.

regards
Michael

Hey Michael. I assume you had no luck? Still no idea what it is? As I am trying to work out what the noise is as mine does the exact same thing. Even the mechanic who had the vehicle a week can’t work it out. Bought two weeks ago, one day after having and the noise started. Similar to you, intermittent. Can drive 30 mins , various road surfaces, not hear it then the noise starts again. For a few mins. Then I can drive 19 miles home in silence. Appears to be no pattern. So Tuesday 26th Aug,  car is prob going back for a full refund . Yet I was hoping to help the garage out, have them pay for a repair and keep it. But at this rate, I can’t afford to wait and keep it longer, plus being back and forth to the non local garage, is time consuming,  unless someone owning an Jimny actually knows what it could be. And assist? 2014 SUZUKI JIMNY1.3 VVT SZ4 3DR AUTO (43,000 miles)

Hi, still no luck it passed it mot, I put more camera under the car to find out what it might be, im not a mechanic and usually drive EVs now which I prefer, but in this video below at the 1 minute mark that shaft that's to turn and when it stops turning the noise goes away, its the shaft with the white sticker on it closest to the camera im unsure what's happening or if it should turn like that

The front propshaft is slowly turning like there is some drag somewhere. If 4WD were engaged it would rotate at the same speed as the back one.

There isn't actually anything to stop it turning in 2WD, except it takes a bit of effort.

I wonder if one of the hubs is engaged.

Try taking the hubs off carefully (undo the 6 bolts around the outsides, they come off with the wheels on and the car on the floor. The splined part in the middle will pull outwards to engage, if one is out and one is in, that could be causing it.

Otherwise, leave the hubs off and go for a short test drive on a clean road (you don't want a dust cloud getting inside the open part of the hub) and see if the noise has gone (and if the front propshaft start to turn again.)

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

I think it's the intermediate prop shaft
I had this sort of noises
It was balancing weight on the prop catching the gear selector frame
I fitted new rear engine mount and replaced the bobbins on gear selector

I use Austin mini poly exhaust bobbins
I would take pictures but it's raining
