In my opinion it probably is the pinion and crown wheel being worn, - it happens.ย
Surely though, just replacing the ring and pinion is far cheaper and easier than replacing the entire rear axle?ย

This is where you would be wrong - setting up a hypoid ring & pinion is a task that requires specialist tools, skill & experience, which the average mechanic rarely has.ย You also only get one chance to "do it right", get it wrong the first time, and by the time you know it's wrong, it's too late to correct it, you'll need to start fresh with another ring & pinion.
This is the reason you're seeing recommendations for a "new" axle, or diff center.
