Has anyone upgraded gen 4 tyres without going bigger?

After spending almost a year on the stock tires, I changed to the Toyo open country RT's.
no difference in acceleration, speed or fuel economy, but a big difference in on and off road performance.
You definitely feel a lot more connected to the road, it corners better too. It's more stable feeling when driving, less prone to weaving ect.
Off-road its definitely much better, it doesn't slip as much up hills or in bogs, you notice the allgrip system doesn't kick in as often.
all in all its the best thing I could have done to it to make it better for my needs.

Looks good too.

Why std 195s?

If you're gonna do it, do it right, get 215s.

This conversation is interesting to me, mostly because the difference between the two sizes being discussed is so small. Any differences felt wil be due to tread compound, tyre construction and weight. The extra width of the tyre will have an absolutely negligible affect on performance, whether on or off road.

Also the simple answer is people change to a wider tyre for looks. Many openly admit it. Jimnys look more beefy on a wider tyre, which fits in with the reasons most people buy a Jimny in the first place, to be seen in a chunky little 4x4.

On the gen3, going to 195/80 or 215/75 from 205/70 gave a useful increase in ground clearance of almost 20mm. Choosing between the two sizes comes down to availability of the tyre you want. I've had good experiences with BFGoodrich so have always run 215/75. The performance and handling suffer noticeably, but for me it's worth it for the extra clearance. I don't imagine that would be any different on 195/80, as they are so close to being the same size. Occasionally I will drive a Jimny on road biased 205s and they always feel much more agile.

On a Jimny, the AllGrip system has to be manually engaged - 2H/4H/4L

Having trouble working out how to quote right, but to answer your question i did do it right.
215's only give you 6mm in extra height and 20mm in width.
but when deflated to the same pressure they have the same sized footprint.
the only difference is the 195's have an elongated footprint where as the 215's have a round one.
Longer elongated footprints are better in most off road situations.
so to my point of view why put a tire on that's going to be heavier, have more rolling resistance and be no better off road.
so I definitely think I did do it properly, rather then just doing what everyone else does.

Actually the AllGrip system also includes the brake LSD, hill hold and hill descent control.
But to be more precise the break LSD doesn't kick in as much as the wheels have a lot more traction.
