Battery size - 054 or 057? was created by rogerzilla
057 is what's in the car.  054 is what most sources recommend but the terminals would be the wrong way around - every Jimny I've seen has +ve at bottom right, looking at it with the bonnet open.  What's correct?  057 is the right orientation and has JIS terminals, but is a bigger battery.

Car is a gen3 M13A auto.

I've just fitted a HB057. Universal terminals (remove std terminal to expose JIS).
2009 Manual, works and fits fine

Yokohama Geolanders, Sony head unit, NAUTILUS Air Horn, DRL conversion, Rear cargo space, Elvis Bobblehead, transfer Guard, Indian hanging Elephant, Koni Heavy track dampers, Custom SS exhaust, Voodoo Doll, Adventure Rack with LED ight bar, vintage ERIBA caravan usually attached (yes it's slow)

The wiki and most websites list 054 as the correct battery, but as you say the terminals are the wrong way round.

I changed mine a couple of years ago, it has a 155 in. I took a Yuasa out (probably original battery), but it doesn't have a code on it and the battery terminals are the same way around as the 155, no need to re-wire.

The one I took out can't be a 054, the terminals are the wrong way around.

A 155 is 45AHr compared to the 35 or 40AHr for the other batteries.

A Yuasa 5057 is about the best battery you can fit in the standard tray. 50ah, 450a and not too expensive either.

The next step down the Yuasa tree is the YBX3057, 45AH and 400CCA.
That's the same battery that Halfords sell as HB057, Yuasa make Halfords batteries, or at least they did when I worked for them. Very cheap with a Halfords trade card and just down the road with a no quibble warranty.

I believe the one I removed was a Bosch 155 (B33), nothing wrong with that, it was just old and needed changing. Same footprint as all the others mentioned. The 054 has the terminals the other way, +ve near bulkhead in my photo.

So the correct battery is the one that physically fits, any of the above, balanced against how much you want to spend. Generally more Ah is a good thing if you can get it.

Thanks all.  Some suppliers do say 057 is correct but 054 seems to be in the majority, even if it's not right!

Just done mine last weekend (removed the old Yuasa). Had the same issue with Halfords etc saying 054. I bought a 057 from GSF @ £49 and that fits correctly. Cheers

Why not go with 155 type?

I think the consensus from this thread is that the wiki is wrong.

Some parts of that wiki article might be wrong as I wrote some parts of it and I am not in UK. Therefore I might have gotten some UK standard numbers wrong. Also I did not even know about type 057 and that it fits Jimnys.

But I can certainly tell from my own personal experience that batteries sized 236L x 127W x 227H fit LHD Jimnys 3 just fine (I used two such batteries from two manufacturers in two Jimnys), and that they should correspond with British battery standard code 155. I wrote about it in the chapter "Solutions for higher battery requirements in Jimnys" in that wiki article. In fact I still have one such battery (taken from my Jimny) in my apartment.

I have never thought about it until now - are there any differences between LHD and RHD Jimnys 3 regarding battery fitment and battery cables in the engine bay?

I wrote the part of the wiki article about 054 batteries just by borrowing info from other places and therefore that might be wrong.

Nothing wrong with the 155 and I believe they will fit, as does the 057.
It simply may be that the 057 is a more common reference, or as in my case, the 057 in the shop in front of me offered more AH and CCA than the 155, although this does vary with manufacturers.
I believe the 054 has the terminals the wrong way around for the UK market Jimny, or at least it does for my Jimny (see my picture of 057 fitted)

That's how I see it. I am sure other batteries will fit and I can't say for sure if all Jimny engine compartments look like mine.

I have a 155 and it fits fine. When buying it I looked at the capacity of the common quoted sizes, the 155 was the highest I saw at 45Ahr. It is highly likely that different manufacturers quote a different capacity for the same battery type/reference so get the biggest/best battery you can at a sensible price.
