Yes it does work but you need to be at TDC for safety and you can finish up a dead end street because you now have to compress the valve spring to remove the collet and spring cap to get at the oil seal. Normal valve compressors push against the valve head to do this.

Thanks. I was thinking of using the rope trick but maybe it would be best to rake the head off. Since the engine is still going well except for the smoke on start up I was considering leaving well alone.

Sealey sell the bits to do the compressor air hold up and spring compressor tool that allows you to keep the head on.
Never used them, but had a search see what I could find.

It's a general purpose tool that may or may not work and either way it may or may not cause damage to adjacent parts. I have worked on engines all my practical life and I wouldn't touch one with the proverbial barge pole.
By the way, what colour is the smoke.

Smoke is blue on start up. It clears after a few seconds.
