I have done a bit of reading and apparently there are two coils one which pull the gauge to full and one that pulls it to empty. I reckon my gauge has lost an earth . probably on the coil that pulls it to empty..
simple enough circuit probably awkward to get behind the dash

but now that you've topped up the tank ...... did the filler pump click off ?
simply set your trip and refill the tank when the tank reaches 200 or 210 miles
and you'll never run out ....

The connector that's showed in the wiring diagram is in the passenger footwell, with this unplugged the gauge drops back to zero . (it didn't drop back to zero when I disconnected the battery)???
The measured voltage on the yellow/red cable is 11.25 volts.
so far its looking like the sender unit. or is it .

right here goes..
the red/yellow is the +ve feed into the circuit.. the transistor and two resistors above the blackline are to provide a regulated voltage else each time the engine laboured your gauge would go down and each time you revved it would go up.. 11.25V seems high since in theory the battery voltage could be lower than that at some points.. the connector [E23] removes the supply so this is why the gauge drops to zero. if this guage has two coils then its unique, all that I have seen are single coil meters.
Question: does the 11.25v change with engine rev? if it does the voltage regualtor is screwed and that will be the reason you are 'half full'.

i had it in my mind that the feed came in on the black +orange. might be easier if i printed out the pages instead of trying to look at them on screen . studying the diagram you can see blue/black from ignition key lg1. feeding 10Afuse
then feeding the yellow +red..
still trying to figure out why the gauge doesn't drop when you disconnect the battery??
But it drops when you disconnect the connector?? Maybe a cable chafed on the body work ??
Will have more time the weekend. will persevere . This is the only thing that doesn't work on my jim jimny
