I used 35mm2 as reccomended by Arbil4x4, main uk agents for Warn. Its the same guage they use on their landrover installs for something like a Warn 9.5XP. If you were going great distance then you could consider 50mm2, to account for the voltage drop.

For extreme use 50mm2 cable would be required for a Warn XP motor as it draws 480 amps a full load.

50mm2 is bigger than the standard Warn cables that were supplied with my winch from new. You are correct about the max draw. I have run a length of 50mm2 to the rear in case I relocate the batteries. 35mm2 is fine for short lengths.

If in doubt call Mr Bowyer. I can't see 35mm2 setting my Jimny on fire.

My TDS 9.5c came with 50 mm2 cables. Warn 8274 comes standard with 50-60 mm2 cables.

I just wonder why the Warn 9.5XP winch only comes with 35mm2 cables. It is way underdimensioned for heavy use and long winch pulls. 35mm2 is only suited for up to around 370 amps.

But you're probably right. Okay for occasional Jimny use :)

Thanks guys, I was planning on mounting the control box under the bonnet but to do this it looks like it will cost me more than I expected  In the mean time I think I will mount it on top of the winch with the standard cable as it will be reasonable protected and move it once I have some spare funds to buy decent cable.
