Today I jacked up the body and gave the wheels a shake, couldn't find any play in them..
Another symptom I have noticed is a knock in the steering wheel when going over gentle bumps at speed, for example when going over a rough patch on a motorway. Could this be linked to the problem? Worn suspension bushes?

Feels like its getting worse but its probably just my imagination, 45-55 is at its worst. Getting pretty annoying!!!

Have you checked both side to side play AND top to bottom play? Also backwards and forwards...

If no play could be steering rack/column

It could be the radius arm bushes thinking about it so check those (usually the chassis end)
