No hammer etc needed. Just a replacement of the flange and also have a look at the roller bearings.

yes the shifter "sheet" must be in good condition but there is also things internally that also need to be good ! The cases sometimes suffer from elongation in the shifter shaft slides ! This is often overlooked by some builders.
the clunk that you get when going into 4 low is due to a few things . One being the bigger step in ratios from high to low with no syncro's. Another is the way the lever is bent to fit
In the jimmy effectively shortens it and reduces leverage. (I prefer the cut a new hole and cover the old one method)
