what engine is it single or twin cam when you removed the vacuum pipe for the hubs did you block the manifold outlets up

it try that first as your creating an air leak after the throttle butterfly so your drawing in more than it mesures as it goes through the butterfly

Just got home to see the thread. Marky is right, there is a vacuum port on the outside of the inlet manifold that has a rubber pipe pushed on that used to go to the vacuum valves. This needs capping off, just cut 1" of pipe, and put a chopped off nail in one end then push over the spigot.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)
