nothing wrong with doing thing your self if you get stuck them ask for help or take it to a garage you learn nothing by letting some one else fix it plus it doesnt cost any thing to look your self
if your to check a few things your self ie mud in rad fins if you have been off roading
check water pump/fan belt see if its there/tight
then when engine is cold fill the cooling system with water and the exspansion bottle up to the line then squeeze the botton hose a few times just to move the water around and top up if needed
then start the car up with the capoff and leave to tick over when temp shows 1/4 put cap on then see if it over heats of not all good(may be) but if it starts to get highturn it off see if the rad is hot also when it off feel the hoses one shoud be hot the other will be a little cooler then when it is stone cold ie meny hours later locate the thermostate housing remove if you no how then when removed tie a bit of string round it and place in a pan of boiling water if it opens refit it if not replace it but there is also the water pump to check as well as the head gasket test but untill now it has cost you nothing apart from thermostate
you could also just remove the themostate and refit the housing with a bit of sealent as the thermostate is the seal and see if it over heats if not then replace it if it does still over heat take it to a garage tell them what you have done and found out and as them to have a look
if you under take any of this its at your own risk i or no one else can be held responsable for any thing going wrong
