Is the Jimny especially prone to this or is there a known weak spot.
Just had a rather unexpected over heat and water loss. Crawling traffic for 30 minutes plus but when the temp went up the heater and blower went on.
All coolant as it should be only a few days ago and no history of leaks. No sign of water in oil, no leaks when engine running when stationary, no sign of any other loss.

I had a similar problem to you. Have a look at this thread and it may help. Does your temp drop as you get back up to speed? Have a look thorugh as it has allmost all the information needed to resolve a overheating Jimny!
It wasnt until i had a chat with a mechanic at work that he sugested the radiator was blocked. After changeing it the problem was solved! When the engine it hot put your hand on the radiator. If parts are hot and other parts cold its more than likely bolcked.

If all looks ok, ie water level ok etc, then the best way to confirm weather or not head gasket failier has accoured is to do a cylinder leakage test. That is the only way of testing it 100 %.

All the other methods are just guessing at it tbh. And you want to be sure either way dont you.

Are you able to carry out a cylinder leakage test?

The cooling system on the Jimny seems to be marginal. If you search on here you will find loads of threads about overheating.
Usual suspects are stuck thermostat, blocked rad, or broken viscous fan. If you offroad then the fins of your rad may be damaged or full of mud...

Headgaskets are not unknown to go, but seems a bit rarer than the other 3 I mentioned (although it always seems to be the first thing that anyone mentions, always thinking the worst I guess)

The first thing anyone should do if there vehicle has overheated is a cylinder leakage test, even if the thermostat was proven to be faulty. it confirms or eliminates possible engine damgage right from the begining. I never said it would be the head gasket, but doing what i suggested would eliminate it or confirm it from the begining, thus giving you better more accurate diagnoses during the next steps.

The biggest problem car owners have is trying to work on their own vehicles and not having a clue what they are doing, just guessing!

Sorry Steve, it wasn't a dig at you mate.

For me getting a cylinder leak test done would be a right pain as I can't get to a garage all week and weekends are way too short. I can however pop outside of an evening and look to see if my radiator is full of mud or the fan spins up properly...
