why does my engine cut out? was created by mike from manchester
Hello, I have a 2000 w reg jimny which sometimes cuts out in traffic, the engine temp is normal. The engine runs lumpy for a few seconds then cuts out .it will not restart until at least 10 minutes.if i put my foot on the accelerator to give it more gas it has no effect apart from the rev counter needle ' bounces ' shortly before cutting out.Last year i put it in a garage and they had it running all day no problem, also diagnostic check showed all ok.it seems to cut out either on approach to a roundabout or at a junction making everybody else angry. my wife is fed up as it always happens to her. Anyone got any ideas what could be the cause.
Thankyou
ps its not my wifes driving!!

My prob was the same and it was the cam angle sensor. Cheap to replace and prob immediately solved.
The device is at the back of the G13BB motor, just behind the rocker cover at the firewall end. Couple of wires leading out of it.

If its a M13a engine it could be the crankshaft sensor. It is located behind the alternator, and because of its position gets very hot. Your symptoms are typical of cam and crankshaft sensor faults. For some reason they don't always show as a fault if you plug in an OBD reader.
