is it just backlash or does it feel lumpy or even jam up ?

if its backlash only it could just be worn bearings ,but if it has any of the other symtoms damaged gears are my guess

I've found my rear diff to make cracking/clicking noises on acceleration, Found the rear diff leaking from the flange and play on the flange. I suspect the bearing has failed due to lack of oil in the cars previous life before me as it had 4.5"lift and no caster correction running the bearing hot.

I've just ordered a new diff as I am fitting a locker.
