i think before you spend any money id be inclined to take it apart and inspect for damage or failed parts

SNAP! even passed the MOT the other week. Also I found a'lot of play/lash in the rear prop.
Its all come off as i'm fitting my lobster with sj props.

Good chance it is some thing to do with the diff, but what kind of condition are the bushes in the rear arms, that could give a thud/clunk when accelerating / changing gear.

Definately the diff, you can rotate the rear prop by hand quite a bit when parked up !
Arm bushes are ok and clunk is a metallic sounding one !
