Is it the diff that has play or the prop UJ's?

Good chance it is some thing to do with the diff, but what kind of condition are the bushes in the rear arms, that could give a thud/clunk when accelerating / changing gear.

Definately the diff, you can rotate the rear prop by hand quite a bit when parked up !

Arm bushes are ok and clunk is a metallic sounding one !
