I've found most of these devices connect easier if plugged in with the engine already running.

i have also tried to plug the device when the engine is running already. but same thing. seems like the device couldnt communicate with the OBD port. although it can draw power from the port.

If its a Philippines or Japanese model then it won't be OBD2 it will be a proprietary version of KWP2000 called SDL/KWP. The only tool that will work with that model is the Suzuki factory tool although I am working on an interface that will be compatible. I don't know when that will be ready, its been a long time in development due to other projects.

SDL/KWP is the protocol used worldwide by the dealer tools and gives access to more data and controls, EOBD/OBD2 is an additional interface for 'public' use implemented in markets that mandated OBD2/EOBD. There is more information on the different protocols here:

Some Suzukis and a bunch of motorcycles.

Oh boy. Too bad for me. Bought my OBD2 device half a year ago, but couldn't find the OBD2 port under my dashboard. I guess I will never be able to use the gadget then...

The port will be there irrespective of the protocol, Suzuki used the J1962 connector on all Jimnys.

Some Suzukis and a bunch of motorcycles.
