OBD 2 Scanners - Any recommendations? was created by teafortwo0789
I would like to buy an OBD2 Scanner. However not being a professional mechanic I need 'adequate' facilities, not a load of little used bells and whistles. I just want to read the error 'codes'. I have a 2003 totally standard Jimny.

The MaxiScan seems interesting but I'm more interested in being able to read all of the error codes, the other info' e,g, MPG MPH Journey details are secondary. Will the MaxScan read all of the Jimny codes?

Thank you.

Is yours a M13A engine or G13B? Hopefully being 2003 it should be an M13A if its not a softtop.

The Maxscan reads the codes ok on a genuine OBD2 car. It does not "interpret" them so you have to look up the code number in the Suzuki manual.

It does not read the codes from the ABS computer and Immobiliser, only a Suzuki scanner does that,

you don't need a scanner to get the error codes

I have a scangauge which works fine in the Jimny and alot of other cars.

I have it permanently connected in my Focus RS to read intake temps.

I have one of the cheap eBay ELM clones: works fine but you have to use the hookey software that came with it, as the "proper" stuff detects it is not a genuine ELM and won't work.

Is there a trick for the OBD2 cars, like the Vauxhall "floor accelerator, press brake, turn ignition on and wait for the light to start flashing out the codes"?

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

Martin, Many thanks. The MaxiScan is looking more attractive. No big deal fro me to carry the Suzuki code number section.
