bearing !!!!!! was created by dc5
Hi guys, I`m a 4x4 noob and have just bought my 1999 jimny for going shooting on farmland.

I noticed a small amount of fluid on the road just beside the front left wheel :(

I know nothing about 4x4`s so I`m after a bit of help and advice.

I took a couple of pics and would like your help identifying the problem.

Its either the Kingpin Bearings or the wheel bearing.

Jack the car up and rock the wheel. If it rocks with your hands top and bottom it tends to be the Kingpin bearings. If it rocks with your hands on either side then it tends to be the wheel bearings. Get an assistant to press the brakes. If it still rocks then its the Kingpin bearings, if the rocking stops then its the wheel bearings

My money would be on the Kingpin bearings

Thanks martin, I have a mechanic going to look at It next week.

What sort of price would I be looking at for both parts?

As with all leaks (including blood from your limbs) it always looks more severe than it really is. You will probably find the road is awash with oil but your diff actually takes very little to top it up.

The usual limitation is that you will quickly become scared of the severe steering wobble that will develop (particularly between 30mph and 40 mph)

Yes,I`ve had the steering judder martin.

I`ve ordered both the bearing and kingpin sets, are there any other things that I should fit while these are being done?

Jase,

To be honest I would have looked at the Kingpin Bearings first. If you keep the wheel bearing sealed, clean and in its box then you can send it back for a refund once your mechanic has looked at the kingpin bearings. My bet would be that the bottom one has completely rusted out.
