rear bearing protection

This is a fair point. If you greased it from the outset with waterproof grease it will stay that way for some time and even if it went dry it would still provide an amount of protection but if sat in water when stuck the water would get in but may be held in to an extent holding the water in the bearing until it does escape back out. It will leave the mud it brought with it in the bearing though.
Just a thought but theory doesn't always work in practice so let us know how it goes and how much longer your bearings last.
One day I might get off my arse and go to brt bearings with a standard rear bearing and see what sealed bearings they can sell with separate spacer. Or, if they can sell a non sealed non spaced bearing and a spacer I wonder if you could use sealant between the bearing and spacer?
If the sealant fails you have the same issue of the water not being able to escape though.

yea i see what your saying but the water that got through the bearing seal was trapped there anyhow so at least this provides another seal that it has to pass.could be possible for me to drill in a grease nipple into the new peice as there is a small gap between the backing plate the the oil seal. im sure it will work as is anyhow. if it will double the life from the 10 000 km tops i was getting from a bearing to 20 000 km it will be well worth it and when the bearing is changed you just change the oil seal.
