Vacuum hub partially engaging was created by jonstaines52@gmail.com
I have recently purchased a nice condition low mileage 2016 Jimny however when I set off from cold the front left hub partially engaged and produces a harsh grating sound between 30/40 mph, if I slow the Jimmy to walking speed it will make a clunky and the hub will disengage so I can carry on in normal 2wd.
If I stop and turn off the engine for even a short time I then have go through the same procedure again.
I have used a hand vacuum pump at the valve end whilst stationary and both both hubs will engage at 150 to 200 on the gauge but disengaging the hub with the other valve vacuum line requires only 150 for the right hand Hub with a small click but the left hand Hub requires 250 to 300 on the gauge with a louder more solid clunky.
I do not know how much vacuum is required normally but the pipes to the hubs will hold vacuum ok and it would appear the partial diengagement occurs once the engine is off , maybe the valve is not centering ? No intermittent 4wd light comes on whilst driving and disengagement by use of the 4wd button on the hubs and subsequent 2wd hub disengagement will not drop out left hub completely until I slow down to a stop again.
Any ideas please?

I can’t work out if the vehicle always tries to engage 4WD by itself or if you manually engage 4WD?
Either way you shouldn’t be using 4WD on the road there is no slip between front and rear axles and eventually you will wind your transmission up un til something breaks.
If the hub is engaging on it’s own, at least the transfer box will not be in 4WD so the front drive shaft will be disconnected. I would take the hub off and inspect, it might be full of grease which is causing it to engage on it’s own.

This is usually caused by a leaking vacuum solenoid. There are 2 of them below the battery.- one to lock and one to unlock. They are identical so to rule it out you could try swapping them over and see if the problem persists. They can be stripped and cleaned.

The test for 4wd to 2wd whist moving was in a straight line as advised in the manual, not something I would normally do,
I know the hub is engaging as if I jack up the car before using it the wheel rotates the front prop.
There is grease in the hub but not a lot as I cleaned and the hub and smeared new grease as per the manual.

I'll try that next, but I don't understand why it only affects the same hub every time and why does that hub require more vacuum to disengage.
Cheers

Not sure of the cure, but to add to the equation.
The hub is held off (2WD) with magnets. If there is dirt packed on the magnet surface or the magnet has gone missing the hold off force will be weak allowing the hub centre to creep
