Lambert is right, don’t use a rattle gun on a locking wheel nut, it will bend/distort the security mechanism and then you will be stuck to get the wheel nuts off. Fortunately, there is only one per wheel, just remove that with a breaker bar.If you have locking wheel nuts do them by hand. Impacts will kill them especially some of the heavy hitting ones on full power.

They are great for undoing stuff though, but if they have adjustable power, make good use of it when doing up.

With the high torque ones these days you have to be careful, very easy to snap bolts, strip threads or over tighten things. Many thanks for all your replies. I have ordered a Milwaukee unit from Toolstation which is slightly more powerful than my Axminster pneumatic and that had twice the power of a standard run of the mill wrench that most dealers sell, so my wheel nuts will quiver with horror when they see it!

One of the features of the Milwaukee impact wrenches, at least the ones I have, is an "auto shut off" mode - when tightening it stops at around 15 ft-lbs, when unscrewing, it will impact at whatever speed you choose (there's a variable speed trigger) and once the nut/bolt starts to turn, it will immediately reduce rpm, allowing you to better control removal.
Follow basic workshop principles, like starting the bolt/nut by hand to avoid cross-threading it, hit it with the impact in auto mode and then finish with a torque wrench set to the desired torque spec.

WOW, COR, BLIMEY it aint harf fast
Seriously, this thing removed one of my spare wheel nuts without having to blink.
I now have 2 old 4 amp batteries plus 2 new 5 amp batteries plus a spare charger plus the unit plus the box. The unit is the same height as my Milwaukee drill/driver but 50mm shorter, so easier to get into tight spaces.
And yes, I do know how to remove anti vandal nuts but many thanks for the tips.
